Guarding against teeth grinding is more than just oral care; it's protecting your skin and facial structure. Dr. Chris Salierno of Tend highlights that relentless grinding can beef up your jawline, shorten teeth, and shift the distance between nose and chin, transforming your facial silhouette. Plus, it's a fast track to wrinkling, especially where expression lines emerge. A simple custom made teeth night guard offers a defense against these effects during sleep, and complemented by targeted jaw exercises, can ensure a taut, youthful complexion and finely-sculpted facial features--showcasing the unexpected connection between jaw workouts and maintaining smooth, supple skin.

Jaw Exercises for Wrinkle Reduction

The quest for the fountain of youth continues as more people are looking into treatments and remedies to turn back the hands of time. Since having smooth, firm, and wrinkle-free skin is a priority, the average American woman spends over $3,700 per year on beauty products and services, while men spend an average of $2,928 per year across the same categories. Indeed, a good skincare routine, combined with a healthy diet and sufficient sleep can help to fight premature skin aging. But did you know that doing jaw and facial exercises is also an excellent way to reduce fine lines and wrinkles?

In a new Northwestern Medicine study, it was found that middle-aged women who participated in a 30-minute facial exercise program for 20 weeks had fuller upper and lower cheeks after the program. They also had reduced signs of visible aging as the exercises stimulated the muscles to increase facial volume and counteract age-related skin loosening. To reduce laugh lines, try this simple jaw exercise at night before going to bed: First, with the tips of your index fingers, apply firm, even pressure to the wrinkles around your mouth. Keep your lips separated, then smile as wide as you can. Hold this position for 10 seconds, then relax. Repeat this exercise 20 times.

Facial Exercises to Slim Your Jawline

If you're a teeth grinder and you notice that your face seems to be getting squarer or bulkier, that's because bruxism enlarges your masseter muscle, which is near your jawline. Just like any muscle that's overworked, the masseter becomes bulky too, resulting in an overly strong jawline. To correct this condition, some people choose to have Botox injected into their masseter muscle to slim down their lower face. Although this method works, the results are temporary and you'll have to do it again after a few months. Meanwhile, others undergo jawline thinning or facial contouring procedures, which can be painful and costly. Recovery time can take a while too, so if you'd rather slim your jaw in a different way, consider doing these facial exercises.

First, place your hands at the base of your neck, then raise your chin while tilting your head back slightly. Extend your lower jaw and press the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Now, tighten your neck muscles by smiling as wide as you can. Hold this position for 25 seconds. Meanwhile, to get rid of a double chin, tilt your head back, stick your tongue out and curl the tip up, then move it up and down for 20 seconds.

Face and Jaw Yoga to Get Rid of Acne

Doing yoga can release harmful toxins from the body to improve hormonal balance, leading to healthier and clearer skin. Traditional yoga exercises can certainly aid the detoxification process, but adding some facial yoga to the mix may help to get rid of acne once and for all. First, inhale some air through your mouth, then close your mouth and transfer the air from one cheek to the other. Repeat this for 30 counts before slowly releasing the air by blowing it out.

Doing jaw exercises not only keeps your facial muscles healthy, but they may also help to give you better skin and a more defined facial structure. Do these jaw and facial exercises whenever you can, and remember to wear a nightguard to alleviate teeth grinding and prevent your skin from aging prematurely.
