How to Tell Which One You Need
Most customers go with a 3mm thick custom dental guard. 3mm is the standard thickness that a dentist would make.
Go with a 2mm guard if:
-
Your grinding is mostly moderate—you wake up with occasional jaw tension, but you aren't waking up your partner with loud grinding noises.
-
You are highly sensitive to bulky things in your mouth and worry about comfort or falling asleep.
-
You primarily clench rather than grind back and forth, needing a slim cushion to absorb pressure without adding unnecessary bulk.
Go with a 3mm guard if:
-
You are a severe, aggressive grinder. If a dentist has noted significant enamel wear, flattened canines, or chipped teeth, you need the extra material.
-
You have a history of chewing through thinner over-the-counter or soft guards relatively quickly.
-
You experience severe morning jaw pain or headaches, where separating the bite slightly more can help relax the masseter (jaw) muscles.
